The Library at Toccoa Falls College in north Georgia bears
the Jones’ family name. And around Raleigh, NC, the
family is well known. Seby B. Jones was the mayor of the
city in the early 70’s.
Through personal and foundation giving, the Jones family
is renowned for its philanthropy. Committed to education,
Mr. Jones had given to four colleges and universities over
the years. Toccoa Falls College, a Christian school, is
a favorite. The family foundation had given generously in
the past, and Seby served as a trustee.
But times changed. The College added two remote campuses,
completed a large building project, had a new and energetic
president, and formed a new foundation. They were hitting
the 21st century running.
Seby Jones passed away, and the decisions as to where to
donate funds were now in the hands of family members who
desired to support educational institutions that were likely
to maximize the use of those funds.
As a result, the Seby B. Jones Family Foundation discussed
with Calvin Edwards & Company the idea of performing
a Strategic and Operational Audit of the institution in
order to provide a snapshot of what the College was doing
and how it was doing it.
A 24-page report told the story. One of the Foundation
trustees commented, “This report gives us a clear
picture – in a businesslike way – of just how
the College is operating. The balance of ‘big picture’
and detail is exactly what we needed to assess how we might
support the school in the future. We also want the College
to provide this report to other donors; it will help them
be more committed in their giving.”
An investment in research provided an independent third-party
assessment of the College, gave clarity and peace of mind,
and enabled a thoughtful discussion at the Foundation as
to how and where to support.
